Preparation

Copy the sheet of Quiz Cards from the appendix onto heavy card stock. Cut into individual cards. Or, you may print these cards.
Students will be working in groups and in pairs for much of the unit. You may want to assign them a group and a partner now and have them work with the same students throughout the unit.

Part 1: Vocabulary Quiz Game Show

  • Divide students into four teams. Explain that they will be playing a game to assess their prior knowledge of plant vocabulary. Each team will try to identify the correct vocabulary word that matches a definition. Walk the class through the steps in the Student Guide for playing the game. Then, distribute the buzzers, shuffle the Quiz Cards, and read the definition on the first card you pick.
  • Using the timer, give teams 30 seconds to try to identify the matching vocabulary word. If a team hits the buzzer and gets the word right, they earn 10 points. If they get the word wrong, they lose 10 points. If all teams are unable to correctly identify the word after 30 seconds, provide the word and reread the definition.
  • Continue with this process until all of the Quiz Cards have been played, keeping score for all teams. You may want to keep a record of the words that students could not identify and reinforce them throughout the unit.

Reassure students that if they cannot identify a vocabulary word, they will not be penalized. The goal is to assess prior knowledge in a fun and engaging way. If students are not familiar with many of the vocabulary words, you may write them on the board at the beginning of the activity.

Part 2: Group KWL Chart

  • Have students read the Unit Introduction in the Student Guide. Then explain to students that they are going to create a group KWL chart about plants. A KWL chart is a three-column chart with distinct headings:

    • What do we KNOW about the topic?
    • What do we WANT to know about the topic?
    • What did we LEARN about the topic?

The first two columns are filled in at the start of the unit, and the final column is filled in at the end of the unit.

  • Instruct students to spend a few minutes brainstorming on the topic and making two lists:

    • List 1: Key ideas and vocabulary terms related to plants that you already know about.
    • List 2: Key ideas and vocabulary terms related to plants that you want to learn about.
  • Display a large sheet of paper for all students to see and sketch a three-column chart on the paper. Write the following headings on the chart:

    • What do we KNOW about the topic?
    • What do we WANT to know about the topic?
    • What did we LEARN about the topic?

Remind students that this activity is to assess their prior knowledge about plants, and encourage students to think about the vocabulary quiz game show they played. It is helpful to discuss plants in general, but guide students to focus on flowering plants during the activity.
